Solution for a Sloping Yard Though it bordered a natural
area a steeply sloping back yard was mostly unusable. The solution was to divide the
slope into a series of terraces reinforced with stone. A broad stone stairway leads from
the house
to the upper level where there is a large patio for entertaining and outdoor dining.
A hottub placed a few steps above has a view of the entire area, and another stone stairway
to the right provides access to a garden area level with the house.
The middle terrace serves as a quiet area with good views of the natural area beyond and
the plantings above.
The bottom terrace, though narrow, is ideal as a horseshoe pit. A small lawn
and a steep slope has become an expansive area for entertaining, relaxation and recreation.
