Robert Bruce began his career at the age of five pushing wheelbarrows of stone for his father who began his career in the same manner. The company itself, begun by Bruce's grandfather, (also Robert Bruce), in Hood River, Or. has been in business since 1917. A stonemason from Scotland he was forced to pose as an Italian to gain work on the Columbia River Gorge Highway as Sam Hill wanted only Italian stonemasons for that project. Some 80 years later, the grandson, Robert Bruce was hired to do restoration work on the retaining wall at Crown Point, the focal point of the Gorge Highway. Sam Hill lays buried at the Stonehenge WWI monument on the Washington side of the river near Biggs, Or.  Bruce's son and daughter are now involved in the business assuring its continuation for another generation.
